Linear Algebra and Its Applications 4th Edition, David Lay

Linear Algebra and Its Applications 4th Edition by David C. Lay introduces the ideas early in a well-recognized, concrete Rn setting, develops them progressively, and returns to them many times all through the text in order that when mentioned within the summary, these concepts are extra accessible.

Linear algebra is comparatively easy for college students through the early phases of the course, when the material is offered in a well-recognized, concrete setting. However when summary ideas are launched, college students usually hit a brick wall. Instructors seem to agree that sure concepts (equivalent to linear independence, spanning, and linear transformations), will not be easily understood, and require time to assimilate.

Since they're basic to the research of linear algebra, students' understanding of these ideas is vital to their mastery of the subject. It additionally publishes articles that give vital purposes of matrix theory or linear algebra to other branches of mathematics and to different sciences. Articles that provide new information or perspectives on the historic improvement of matrix theory and linear algebra are also welcome.

Expository articles which may serve as an introduction to a topic for workers in associated areas and which bring one to the frontiers of research are encouraged. Critiques of books are published sometimes as are convention stories that present an historical record of major conferences on matrix concept and linear algebra.

Fundamental ideas of linear algebra are introduced within the first seven lectures, in the concrete setting of Rn, and then gradually examined from different points of view. Later generalizations of these concepts appear as natural extensions of familiar ideas. Focus on visualization of concepts throughout the book helps readers grasp the concepts.

Icons in the margins to flag topics for which expanded or enhanced material is available on the textbook’s companion Website. A modern view of matrix multiplication is presented, with definitions and proofs focusing on the columns of a matrix rather than on the matrix entries. Numerical Notes give a realistic flavor to the text. Students are reminded frequently of issues that arise in the real-life use of linear algebra.

Algebra and Trigonometry 3rd Edition, by James Stewart, Lothar Redlin and Saleem Watson explains concepts simply and clearly, without glossing over difficult points. Problem solving and mathematical modeling are introduced early and reinforced throughout, providing students with a solid foundation in the principles of mathematical thinking.

Comprehensive and evenly paced, the book provides complete coverage of the function concept, and integrates a significant amount of graphing calculator material to help students develop insight into mathematical ideas. The authors' attention to detail and clarity, the same as found in James Stewart's market-leading Calculus book, is what makes this book the market leader.

Approximately 20% of the exercises in the text are new. In addition, each exercise set has been restructured to begin with new concept exercises, and reorganized to more closely follow the exposition in the corresponding section. The section entitled "Principles of Problem Solving" is now a Prologue to the book. Problem Solving sections, each highlighting a particular problem solving principle, are now posted on the Book Companion Website.

Discovery Projects, which encourage and motivate students to further explore chapter topics, are now available on the Book Companion Website. All examples in the book are now paired with a new Now Try Exercise XX, allowing students to reinforce their understanding of a concept by practicing the technique that is involved. This integration also teaches and encourages students to solve rather than just memorize.

Chapter 3 has been completely rewritten to focus more sharply on the fundamental and crucial concept of function. The material on quadratic functions, formerly in this chapter, is now part of the chapter on polynomial functions. Chapter 4 now begins with a section on quadratic functions, leading to higher degree polynomial functions.

Chapter 6 includes a new section on inverse trigonometric functions and right triangles (Section 6.4), which is needed in applying the Laws of Sines and Cosines in the following section, as well as for solving trigonometric equations in Chapter 8. Chapter 7 includes a new section on inverse trigonometric functions (Section 7.5) to better segue into the section on harmonic motion that follows. Chapter 8 has been completely revised, including two new sections on trigonometric equations (Sections 8.4 and 8.5) that expand coverage of this topic.

Algebra Graduate Texts in Mathematics 3rd Edition, Serge Lang

Algebra Graduate Texts in Mathematics 3rd Edition by Serge Lang has added exercises and made numerous corrections to the text. It is intended as a basic text for a one year course in algebra at the graduate level or as a useful reference for mathematicians and professionals who use higher-level algebra. This book successfully addresses all of the basic concepts of algebra. For the new edition, the author has added exercises and made numerous corrections to the text.

The author has an impressive knack for presenting the important and interesting ideas of algebra in just the "right" way, and he never gets bogged down in the dry formalism which pervades some parts of algebra. It has grown again, dealing with topics close to the author’s heart from number theory, function theory and algebraic geometry. For the math graduate who wants to broaden his education this is an excellent account; apart from standard topics it picks out many items from other fields.

This makes it a fascinating book to read, a very readable treatment of many modern mainline topics as well as some interesting out-of-the-way items. Lang's Algebra changed the way graduate algebra is taught, retaining classical topics but introducing language and ways of thinking from category theory and homological algebra. It has affected all subsequent graduate-level algebra books.

This text introduces the basic notions of algebra, and the main difficulty for the beginner is to absorb a reasonable vocabulary in a short time. None of the concepts is difficult, but there is an accumulation of new concepts which may sometimes seem heavy. To understand the book, the reader needs to know essentially only the basic definitions of this first part. Of course, a theorem may be used later for some specific and isolated applications, but on the whole, we have avoided making long logical chains of interdependence.
